Colour Extraction Guide

How the palette is found, and how to use it well.

How It Works

k-means clustering

The image is scaled down, then similar pixels are grouped into clusters. Each cluster's average becomes one colour, sized by how much of the image it covers.

Vivid Mode

skip greys

Photos are often mostly sky, walls or shadow. Vivid mode down-weights greys so the accent colours come through.

Pick Exact Colours

click the image

Clicking the preview reads the exact pixel under your cursor and adds it to the palette.

Building a Scheme

60 · 30 · 10

Use the most common colour for backgrounds (60%), a second for surfaces (30%), and a vivid one for buttons and links (10%).

Check Contrast

WCAG AA 4.5:1

Colours that look great together may not be readable as text on each other. Check text pairs with a contrast checker.

Screen vs Print

RGB → CMYK

Extracted colours are screen (sRGB) values. For print, convert them in your design software using the printer's colour profile.
